How to Record HD From a Satellite

How to Record HD From a Satellite
Record television programming allows you to watch programs that you would otherwise miss because you are away from the home. Fortunately, if you use satellite TV service such as that offered by Dish Network and DirecTV, the process of setting up your satellite system to record high-definition programming could not be simpler.

Instructions
1
Contact your satellite provider to upgrade your current satellite receiver to a DVR-capable receiver if you do not have one already. In addition to an equipment upgrade, you will likely also need to add the DVR service onto to your service plan. Once all upgrades have been completed, you are ready to set up your satellite service for recording.

2
Tune the satellite receiver to an HD channel. The numbers assigned to HD channels vary by satellite provider, your exact service plan and your geographic area. Any questions as to which parts of your channel lineup are devoted to HD programming are best addressed by contacting the technical support department of your cable provider.

3.Press "Record" on your satellite remote. You should immediately see a popup allowing you to specify recording options like the length of the recording and how long your want to save the recording.

4
Set a program to record in the future by opening the satellite receiver's on-screen guide and selecting the program. In other words, if you wish to record a program airing four days from now, open the guide and move four days ahead until your find the program. Select the program with your satellite receiver remote and you will be able to set the recording options.

How to Add an External Antenna on a Dreambox

How to Add an External Antenna on a Dreambox
An external antenna for a Dreambox flat screen TV attaches through the antenna/cable input. In fact, any coaxial cable connection will attach via this input, through which the highest quality 1080i broadcasts can be received. Any other devices that connect to the TV should use HDMI cable connections for the highest resolution.

Instructions
1
Connect the antenna coaxial cable to the antenna/coax input on the TV set. The coaxial cable connection of a male F-connector is the threaded screw-on connection on the back of the Toshiba TV. The coaxial connection from the cable is either a screw-on or push-on type.

2.Access the input for the antenna through the onscreen prompts with the remote control or from the TV's menu button. The TV screen will automatically configure itself when either Antenna or Cable is selected as an input.

3.Press Menu on the remote control to open the TV's directory. Four buttons on the remote are used to access navigation of the menus. The four buttons are Menu, Ch. Return, Enter and Exit. The Ch. Return button is a back button that returns the menu to the previous active state. Exit closes the on-screen menus. The four direction buttons that surround the Enter button in the center of the remote are used to control up-down and left-right movement of the active cursor.

4
Choose the Installation section. The Installation menu is the far right graphic in the row of six menu options. (Once the Installation menu is active, it's box turns white; all other menus are light blue, to indicate they are not selected.) Selection of menus are made with the left-right direction buttons, which Toshiba calls Navigate buttons.

5
Choose the antenna/cable option in the Installation menu. It is the first option listed. The Input Configuration button permits selection of either Antenna or Cable through the set's coaxial input. Select the Antenna option.

6
Choose the Terrestrial menu. Terrestrial menus are: Input Configuration, Channel Program, Channel Add/Delete, Channel Tuning Mode, and Signal Meter. Selecting Channel Program automatically scans and saves all available channels. Channel Add/Delete displays a list of all these channels, and permits individual on-off selection. Signal Meter provides a graphic real-time depiction of channel signal strength, as well as additional signal statistics.

7.Watch over-the-air (OTA) stations through the antenna connection setting. Any OTA signals are broadcast in multiple bands, as well as the highest resolution currently broadcast.

How to Align a Satellite Dish Without a Meter

How to Align a Satellite Dish Without a Meter
In order for a satellite dish to pick up a signal, it must have the correct alignment with the satellite. It is vital to have the dish correctly installed and positioned accurately, as well. The difference in only a few degrees one way or the other will directly affect the results. If you have a satellite meter, you can quickly locate the satellite(s) needed. You can also find them without the use of a meter (satellite finder). You will need to have a compass and either be able to see a connected TV, be within earshot of a TV or have someone to assist you.

Instructions
1
Check the location of your satellite dish. In order for a DirecTV or Dish Network dish (antenna) to receive signal from the required satellites, there must be a clear vision of the southern sky. Make certain the dish is pointed in the precise direction needed. Use your compass to locate the southern sky. If your satellite dish is not located in an area that will work, move it to one that will.

2
Verify the satellite dish setup. If the antenna is for DirecTV, it must be set at 51 degrees elevation. Look on the back of the dish and locate this setting. Check that it is correct, or use your wrench to loosen and adjust it to the precise degree needed. A Dish Network one should be set at 220 to 230 degrees. The skew must also be set to 133 on the Dish Network dish. Tighten all of the bolts and screws on the dish, but you may need to loosen the ones holding it to the "mast" (pole) to align it as directed in Step 5.

Clear the area of any obstacles. Objects must not interrupt the signal from the satellites to the dish. Remove any branches, bushes or other obstructions blocking the satellite dish, or move it to another place. The signal comes down at a 50-degree angle from the sky, so be certain to inspect the area within this space.

4
Ready the equipment. Turn the receiver and television on. Open the menu to dish "Setup" or "Installation" and select "Satellite" and then "Signal Strength," or it may be called "Signal Meters." If you have someone to help you, have him stay in front of the television to talk to you. They can inform you what the signal strength is by yelling to you, using a phone or walkie-talkie. If you do not have an assistant, you can either watch the signal (if you can see it from the dish), or you can go by the sound given off by the receiver. You will see the signal meter go up or hear the tone change as you zone in on a satellite.

5
Align the satellite dish. Once the satellite dish is correctly set up (through following Steps 1 through 4), the alignment of it should be fairly easy. All you should have to do is face it to the southern sky and begin moving it very slowly in either direction (left or right). Once it picks up the satellite's signal, you will see (or hear) it. Check the amount of the satellite signal. A DirecTV dish can go as high as 100, but a Dish Network dish goes as high as 125. The higher the signal, the better chances you have of not losing it during bad weather. Try moving the dish slightly to improve the signal, if you are below 70 to 80. Once you have a high enough number, tighten all of the bolts and screws on the satellite dish.
