Inside Google’s Secret Drone-Delivery Program

A zipping comes across the sky.

A man named Neil Parfitt is standing in a field on a cattle ranch outside Warwick, Australia. A white vehicle appears above the trees, a tiny plane a bit bigger than a seagull. It glides towards Parfitt, pitches upwards to a vertical position, and hovers near him, a couple hundred feet in the air. From its belly, a package comes tumbling downward, connected by a thin line to the vehicle itself. Right before the delivery hits the ground, it slows, hitting the earth with a tap. The delivery slows, almost imperceptibly, just before it hits the ground, hardly kicking up any dust. A small rectangular module on the end of the line detaches the payload, and ascends back up the vehicle, locking into place beneath the nose. As the wing returns to flying posture and zips back to its launch point half a mile away, Parfitt walks over to the package, opens it up, and extracts some treats for his dogs.

The Australian test flight and 30 others like it conducted in mid-August are the culmination of the first phase of Project Wing, a secret drone program that’s been running for two years at Google X, the company’s whoa-inducing, long-range research lab.

Though a couple of rumors have escaped the Googleplex—because of course Google must have a drone-delivery program—Project Wing’s official existence and substance were revealed today. I’ve spent the past week talking to Googlers who worked on the project, reviewing video of the flights, and interviewing other people convinced delivery by drone will work.

Taken with the company’s other robotics investments, Google’s corporate posture has become even more ambitious. Google doesn’t just want to organize all the world’s information. Google wants to organize all the world.

During this initial phase of development, Google landed on an unusual design called a tail sitter, a hybrid of a plane and a helicopter that takes off vertically, then rotates to a horizontal position for flying around. For delivery, it hovers and winches packages down to the ground. At the end of the tether, there’s a little bundle of electronics they call the “egg,” which detects that the package has hit the ground, detaches from the delivery, and is pulled back up into the body of the vehicle. dm8000 hd wholesale led light usb flash drive usb flash drive wholesale usb flash drive flash drive manufacturer led lighting LED Wall Wash light LED video pixels LED Digital Tube light LED Spot Light LED Point Light LED Under-ground Lighting LED Commerical Lighting LED ba?ador de pared LED píxel de luz Tubos LED luz llevada del punto LED punto de Luz lenovo cellphone LED Spotlights Buried LED Iluminación Comercial Мытья стены СИД света Светодиодные видео пикселей Светодиодные трубки

Our Sources Say the Next iPhone Will Include NFC Mobile Payments

Platforms like Google Wallet, Isis, and Square have been around for years, while Apple has remained curiously silent on the mobile payments front. Well not anymore.

The company’s next iPhone will feature its own payment platform, sources familiar with the matter told WIRED. In fact, that platform will be one of the hallmark features of the device when it’s unveiled on September 9. We’re told the solution will involve NFC.

Apple is in the perfect position to launch its own mobile wallet. The Cupertino company has a vast trove of credit cards already on file thanks to iTunes (over 800 million, in fact), and a huge pool of potential users, thanks to the millions of iOS devices out there. And mounting evidence has indicated that the company is investing in such an endeavor.

Over the years, the company has filed a number of patents relating to an e-wallet platform. One, published this past January, detailed how dual wireless protocols like NFC and Bluetooth could be paired to complete a transaction while sensitive data is stored in a “secure element” in the device’s hardware. Another patent describes a payment system that’s location and context aware, offering the user various options (like rewards cards or coupons) when relevant.

On the business side, The Information previously reported that conversations between Apple and payment companies have heated up in recent months and that Apple’s solution will incorporate a “so-called secure element” in the phone where sensitive financial information would be stored. Apple has also made hires relating to “building a business around the hundreds of millions of credit cards it already has on file.”

While Apple’s exact implementation is still unclear at this point, we can still make some general idea of what it will look like. The company has made a huge push to get its Bluetooth LE-transmitting iBeacons into retailers across the country. And because Apple did not spend a great deal of time expounding on iBeacons at WWDC this year, it’s possible they could be a greater focus at Apple’s September media event—as a part of its mobile payment solution. Touch ID will also likely play a role in securing the platform, and it could make sense for Passbook, Apple’s hub for tickets and coupons, to get some level of integration with the service too. We’ll find out more on September 9th. dm8000 hd wholesale led light usb flash drive usb flash drive wholesale usb flash drive flash drive manufacturer led lighting LED Wall Wash light LED video pixels LED Digital Tube light LED Spot Light LED Point Light LED Under-ground Lighting LED Commerical Lighting LED ba?ador de pared LED píxel de luz Tubos LED luz llevada del punto LED punto de Luz lenovo cellphone LED Spotlights Buried LED Iluminación Comercial Мытья стены СИД света Светодиодные видео пикселей Светодиодные трубки

Apple announces special event for Sept. 9

Apple on Thursday sent out invitations to a special event being held on Sept. 9, 2014 at 10:00 am.

Typically Apple’s events are held either at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco or at the company’s campus, but this year is a bit different. Apple said in the invitation that the event will be held at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, the city where Apple’s corporate headquarters is located.

It’s widely expected that Apple will introduce new iPhones at the event, which makes perfect sense—Apple has used the September event to launch new iPhones for a number of years now. Getting new products out in the fall sets the company up for a solid holiday shopping season, the busiest time of the year for consumers.

I will be at the event and will bring you coverage as it happens. dm8000 hd wholesale led light usb flash drive usb flash drive wholesale usb flash drive flash drive manufacturer led lighting LED Wall Wash light LED video pixels LED Digital Tube light LED Spot Light LED Point Light LED Under-ground Lighting LED Commerical Lighting LED ba?ador de pared LED píxel de luz Tubos LED luz llevada del punto LED punto de Luz lenovo cellphone LED Spotlights Buried LED Iluminación Comercial Мытья стены СИД света Светодиодные видео пикселей Светодиодные трубки

Apple builds a hidden structure at Flint Center, site of Mac unveiling, ahead of Sept. 9 event

Apple today issued invitations for its upcoming iPhone 6 event on September 9, which is also said to include its much-anticipated wearable device. According to the invitations, Apple is planning to host the event at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts at De Anza College in Cupertino, the same location where Steve Jobs introduced the original Mac 30 years ago.

For the occasion, it appears that Apple has been building a massive structure on the campus, which has been kept under tight wraps with a white barricade. A MacRumorsreader has sent in images of a mysterious structure at the Flint Center, which appears to span three stories and is protected by "scads" of security people. Administrators had previously declined to comment on what the structure is for, stating only "We are not at liberty to discuss that due to client wishes."

Apple has not held an event at the Flint Center in many years, so the company's return to the site of the original Mac unveiling suggests its upcoming announcement will be a major one. The Flint Center has a much higher seating capacity than other venues where Apple has unveiled products in the past, including the Yerba Buena Center and its own Cupertino campus.

Earlier this year, Apple iTunes chief Eddy Cue said that Apple's got the "best product pipeline" he'd seen in his 25 years at the company in the works, and Tim Cook promised "really great stuff" in new product categories.

Despite the cryptic "Wish we could say more" message on the media invitations, rumors have suggested Apple is planning to unveil both the iPhone 6 and a new wearable deviceat the September 9 event.

It is unknown whether Apple has plans to broadcast the event on the web and Apple TV as it has done for recent events, but MacRumors will provide live coverage both onMacRumors.com and through the MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

How to Synchronize LED Lights With iPod Music

How to Synchronize LED Lights With iPod Music

Lights that blink on and off in time with music are often used by dance clubs to excite the crowd. To create your own "light show" with the music coming from an iPod, use a music sync device. There are a number of these devices available from computer and electronics stores, and even hobby shops. These devices all work in a similar manner to control the illumination of lights in time with audio. Those that include LED lights as part of their makeup eliminate the need for any assembly work whatsoever. An audio speaker, however, will also be needed (e.g., an iPod music dock) in order for the iPod's music to be heard.

Instructions
1
Place the music sync device on a table. Stretch out the LED light modules attached to the music sync device so that they form an irregular pattern on the table. Plug the music sync device's power cord into a wall socket for power. Press the music sync device's power button to turn it on and supply power to the LED lights.

2
Place the speaker dock on the table. Plug its power cord into a wall socket for power. Insert the iPod into the speaker dock's iPod connector.

Aim the front of the music sync device, which contains the built-in microphone, toward the front of the speaker dock.

4
Press the power button on the speaker dock to turn it on. Press the "Menu" button on the iPod to bring up the menu. Select "Music" from the menu. Scroll down the list of choices on the screen and select a playlist. Press the "Play" button to begin playing songs from the playlist.

5
Press the "Volume +" button on the speaker dock to increase the audio volume. Continue increasing the audio volume until the LED lights of the music sync device begin to blink.

6
Adjust the fine-tuning knob on the music sync device to control the speed and intensity of the light's blinking. Turn the room lights off and enjoy the light show as the music plays.

Tips & Warnings
Music sync devices that rely on being plugged in to independent LED lights must not exceed the rating for the AC power of the device.

How to Build a Grow Box With LED Lighting

Growing your own plants at home can be even more productive when you get them to grow inside in an organic grow box. With the advent of bright light emitting diodes, or LEDs, you can add intense light close to your seedlings without burning the plants. The construction of a grow box basically involves using a structure large enough to house your plants with extra space for air ventilation.

Instructions
1
Line a large box or plastic storage container with sheets of aluminum foil. Use a few beads of craft glue along the inside of the box to hold the foil in place. The foil will reflect more of the light around the plants than a box without foil.

2
Place a shallow tray in the bottom of the box to hold drainage water. This makes it easier to water the plants and keeps the bottom of the grow box clean.

3.Set your soil-free filled plant pots onto the tray, while leaving enough space between the plants for good air circulation.

4
Attach two rows of high-intensity white LED light strips to the bottom of the cover of the grow box. Some strips come with pre-attached adhesive while others require a few screws to keep them in place. Drill a hole through the side edge of the cover with a drill. To keep the hole small, drill the hole as large as the width of the cord and slice from the hole to the edge of the cover. Pry open the slit with a utility knife to slide your plug through.

5
Place the cover over the organic grow box. Plug in the LED lights to test. Remove the cover. Plant your seeds, add water and nutrients as needed per plant. Replace the cover on the box, turn on the LED lights and wait for the plants to sprout.

How to Find If an LED Tail Light Meets Department of Transportation Standards

How to Find If an LED Tail Light Meets Department of Transportation Standards

One of the key difficulties in car modification and repair is ensuring that your car is "street legal"--that is, it complies with all the standards and regulations for cars implemented and enforced by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Even a non-standard tail light can mean that your car can be taken off the road. With careful examination, however, ensuring your LED tail light meets government standards is a simple process.

Instructions
1
Go to an automotive parts store and examine the tail light you would like to install. The packaging will be clearly marked if the tail light is approved by the federal Department of Transportation. Also examine it for signs that it is a counterfeit part; such signs include misspellings on the packaging, bad grammar and incorrect contact information for the company. If you find signs of a counterfeit part, or no sign of DOT approval, assume it is not approved and investigate other brands until you find one that is DOT-approved and has no signs of counterfeiting.

2
Examine the specifications of the tail light and compare them to your state's specifications for tail lights. While it is likely the government and the state have very similar requirements, there may be subtle differences that may disqualify the light. If possible, ask to see a demonstration model of the part, or ask if there are cars at the shop with this tail light already installed so you can see it in action.

3
Install the tail light, and then test it to make sure it performs to both federal and state standards. Turn the wheel to the direction it is signaling in to see if it shuts off. Time the light to ensure it is not flashing too quickly, which may be a safety hazard for epileptic drivers. Ensure the light turns on and turns off smoothly with the use of the turn signal, and that it has been wired to the turn indicator on the dashboard. Look at the light at night and ensure it is bright enough to be seen but not bright enough to dazzle other drivers.

Tips & Warnings
Use only reputable auto parts dealers and installers. For local dealers, check sites like Yelp to find out more about their reputation and business. Local and national dealers will likely carry parts that meet state and federal standards.

Log on to the website of the company you are considering buying a tail light from. The site should note the part is DOT approved.

Counterfeit car parts are a major risk. If you have any suspicion that a part is counterfeit, do not install it.

Never install a car part yourself unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you are uncomfortable or uncertain, have a professional install it for you.
