How to Add Subtitles With Avidemux

Avidemux, a free video-editing application, includes filters that can embed subtitle files into video files. Subtitle files are often distributed separately from video files. If you want to play a video on a video player that doesn’t support the subtitle file format, you can embed the subtitles directly into the video file. Avidemux transcodes, or converts, the video file to a new format and embeds the subtitles from the provided subtitle file. Avidemux can add subtitles from files in VobSub, DVB-T, ASS/SSA and SRT/SUB formats.

Instructions

Open your video file in Avidemux by clicking the “Open” button on the toolbar, browsing to the video file on your computer and double-clicking it.

Click the drop-down box containing “Copy” under Video at the left side of the Avidemux window and select a new video format for your video.


3.Click the “Filters” button in the Video section.

Click the “Subtitles” category at the left side of the Video Filter Manager window that appears.

Select the format your subtitle file is in by clicking it in the middle pane and click the plus-sign-shaped “Add” button at the bottom of the window to add the filter.

Click the “Open” button to the right of Subtitle File in the window that appears, browse to the subtitle file on your computer and double-click it.

Use the other options in the dialog to customize the font, position, size and color of the subtitles, and then click “OK.” Avidemux offers different options depending on the original subtitle file’s format.

Click the “Close” button to close the filters window.

Click the “File” menu, point to “Save,” click “Save Video” and provide a file name for the new video.
